10th Ji.hlava International
Documentary Film Festival

October 24 – 29, 2006

The festival launched its Opus Bonum category in which a single-member jury selects the cream of the world’s documentary crop. The first juror of this competition section, director, poet, pianist and singer Khavn de la Cruz from Philippines granted the award to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s director Nedžad Begović for his film Totally Personal. Media later referred to the film director as to a mad genius and a narcissist. The festival’s biggest star was Portuguese doyen of documentary filmmaking, Manoel de Oliveira, whose first film dates back to 1931. “Jihlava is the Mecca of documentary cinema,” said the 98-year-old director, brimming with energy. The bold statement “Things Have Never Been Better” became the motto of the festival’s tenth edition and inspired director Vladimír Morávek to organise an intellectual happening in Prague’s legendary Slavia Café under the same name.
