Cursed Valley

director: Štefan Kamenický
original title: Zakliata dolina
country: Czechoslovakia
year: 1966
running time: 12 min.

synopsis

An uncompromising documentary about remote areas in Eastern Slovakia; it takes aim at society and the state that is unable to guarantee a decent life for all its citizens. In a matter-of-fact way the film depicts poor living conditions and hopelessness for the future: children don’t attend school because they are needed to help in the fields, men leave for seasonal jobs, and alcoholism and even genetic diseases are on the rise.

biography

Štefan Kamenický (1932-2009) began as an assistant director on Štefan Uher’s films. He was interested in social issues; in the early 1960s he still approached them poetically, but later more objectively, even critically. His best known films include Flowers on Silici (1961), and The Promised Land (1968).
