director: Vladimír Turner
original title: 14,4V17.11.
country: Czech Republic
year: 2020
running time: 4 min.

synopsis

Like the director's other films, this one was also created during the filming of an event in public space, specifically capturing fragments of the celebrations of the anniversary of the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution. The film, ostensibly a reportage, transforms the event into a vortex that pays homage to avant-garde films from the first half of the 1920s.

Q&A with the director Vladimír Turner:

biography

In addition to documentaries, artist Vladimír Turner (1986) also focuses on art in public space and activism. He combines these three currents in his work and thus creates unique works. Many of his films have been screened at the Ji.hlava festival.

Binary Revolver
Mona Lisa for robots. A series of moving images created using binary operations in an open source software program called Revolver, which is similar to image synthesizers in which text instructions are transformed into visual data. The soundtrack was created by recycling pixels and converting color values into sound waves.

noimage
FilmWIND consists of audio and visual animation based on an automated analysis of various environmental factors – sound, light, wind velocity. Using recording tools created himself, the filmmaker transforms the video image directly as it is being recorded in order to imprint upon it the physical processes going on around the camera.

Horizontalis
The audiovisual essay explores the Danish part of Jutland from the view of both a living eye and an inanimate object. The horizontal line of the water surface represents a penetrable borderline between the world of people and the world of nature, bubbling with rippling reflections of the outer realities while accompanied with wind, voice and silence blasts.

How Weather is Made
“In 1990-92, I found myself suffering from schizoactive psychosis, as the doctors called my state of mind. I was filled with delusions and fantasies. Through my actions and behavior, I ‘created’ clouds, storms, tornados, downpours, blizzards, cyclones, anti-cyclones both where I lived and throughout the world.” (Zdeněk Košek) Storms for projection and quadrophonic sound. Traces
A legendary story of friendship, told in a minimalist style using expansive shots of snow-covered landscapes. Two skiers emerge from the thick fog: In March 1913, Bohumil Hanč and Václav Vrbata died tragically in the Giant Mountains during an international 50km ski race. When the weather took an extreme turn for the worse, Hanč fell and injured himself. Vrbata turned back and lent him some his clothing, but neither survived.

It's me
The film examines the current trend of capturing our own image using photography or video, in which the boundary between our real and image Selves disappears at the moment we turn the camera lens on ourselves. The photograph or video is thus no longer just a visual representation, but a depiction of our true Self.    Q&A with the director Tomáš Svoboda and other authors of films from the Fascinations section:

Delimitation
A young woman searches for a new apartment in a busy city. The film tests the possibilities of film language by placing more emphasis on the interplay of sound and movement than on classical character dialogue, and instead of traditional narration, it combines stylized movements with expressive dance that suddenly interrupts the flow of the story at certain moments.   “What fascinates me is the space itself and our ability to discover ourselves through it, in particular that exact place we can call our home. The space we are surrounded by creates a constant dialogue with our own identity.” T. Vejvodová

Dream I Had / Virgin Fields
A passing landscape projected into a hypnotic pulsating structure explores time perception in relation to motion. The iridescent chain of trunks, branches and leaves zooming past creates counterpoint to the cyclically re-emerging ambient soundscape interspersed with beats by Evitceles, a Bulgarian experimental musician.

Pastiche
Inspired by the concept of retromania, the filmmaker calls attention to the current trend of recycling older visual styles and artifacts from the last decades of the 20th century. The numerous defects in image quality and the psychedelic soundtrack from homemade cassette recordings were created on purpose when digitalizing the original analogue material.

Insection
The slow movement of various species of insect in an abstract, brightly lit setting creates suggestive allusions to incontrollable chaos, apathy, and the decay of social structures. The minimalist visual imagery is accompanied by ambient music that works with realistic sound and static.
