A scary yet funny tale about the journey to collective unconsciousness via experiments with hypnosis through a collage of found footage from instructional, documentary, and fictional films, layered with themes of personal experiences and frustrations, reflections on social stereotypes and desires, and images of wild or strange animate and inanimate nature. Jay Rosenblatt (1955), American independent filmmaker and trained psychotherapist, is the creator of over thirty films in which he examines the nature and limits of the human psyche and emotions. He has received over a hundred various awards for his work. In addition to teaching, he also organizes the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. His films I Just Wanted To Be Somebody (2006), Four Questions for a Rabbi (2008), and I Used to Be a Filmmaker (2003) have been screened at the Jihlava IDFF.

In the middle of the Teviot River in Scotland, the filmmaker saw a color in the sky like in the paintings of Gustav Klimt. He translates his amazement at this moment into fluid patterns of a digitally decomposed scene, all the way to its radical ending when the variously colored grids flowing on the screen like a calm horizon again dissolve into Klimt’s golden color. "Making films is opening my heart and letting the magical powers of life shine in my imagination to merge them in images. I try to thrill those who watch colour and time flow in my films." J. The Image that Spits, the Eye that Accumulates
The color of skin and of film become the center of discourse: The filmmaker’s mixed-race background is reflected in imprints of the landscape and ruptures within it, but also in the color of the faded Kodachrome film, whose typical visual characteristics have dissolved in time. Hues are barely visible and only with difficulty capture the image of a body that does not fall into any clear categories.  "Where does film fail or resist us? The result is a musical composition created through an abstracted reflection of the nature, look, and visual diversity of a place where ships arrive and depart. A rural countryside without people stretches out into patterns of nature that overlap with the detailed tracing of the contours of herbs and trees. This rural peace is disturbed by the nervous camera and the layered traces of clumps of grass, branches, and bushes. The blades of grass leave behind their contours, which are sketched into a fleeting image of a meadow with low grass and, here and there, the shadows of trees.

Natural textures and close-ups of various surfaces of soil, rocks and water are vertically sliced and rhythmically abstracted. Within the stream of images, this tour of the outer world becomes a way of experiencing the landscape and its transformations, in whose regularity we can find stability and inner peace. “Cho´s internal visions and perception of the outer world come together in an abstract meditation on space, place and sound. Natural landscapes are pushed to the edge of abstraction through layering and other forms of manipulation.”

Using the typical method of breaking the image down into digital elementary particles and their subsequently rearrangement, the filmmaker erases and recreates trees in the village of Les Moutiers in western France. The originally lush green and glowing yellow colours are transformed and set in motion until the viewer is unsure as to when the image is real and when it is a parasite that has attacked the digital imprint. The crowns of the trees are illuminated by the radiance of a cloudless sky. The leaves reflect the light, but after just a few seconds the image freezes and dissolves into a mesh of colour fields hinting at the falling leaves in the early autumn.

A visualization of the workings of the high-frequency oscillators once used to test military sonars and medical ultrasound devices is juxtaposed with abstract illustrations of a Chinese mathematician’s differential equations, and their visualization through analogue computer processes shows the subtle exactness of changing textures.  "Technology is a deforming mirror that shows us what humans think and do. The algorithmic break-down of images of a stone colonnade creating hallucinatory patterns contrasts with the peaceful dusk among the old hallways and colonnades of Cambodia’s Buddhist temple of Angkor Wat, through which barefoot monks slowly walk, copying their daily rituals.The geometric fragmentation into a flicker composition consisting of mathematically precise cuts and rhythms works well in relation to the architecture and represents a provocative violation of the natural harmony of the place and building.

Images of the landscape and man in it stutter, are lost behind defects, the loss of information and white noise, thus becoming a fitting metaphor for the restless region they depict. The basic building block is stone: it appears as a fortress and as hurled anger, in disintegrating images accompanied by the poetry of Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, which was read 20 years ago when the first peace accord was signed between Israel and Palestine.“Oh, the poem of stone sadness, the poem thrown on the stones, the poem of thrown stones. Is there in this land a stone that was never thrown?”

A collage of reflections on various artificial and natural surfaces forms fleeting, concrete and variable abstract visual compositions, with a voiceover meditation on forms of perception related to the acquisition and deepening of knowledge, from Antiquity to today’s technical and social influences on how we perceive the world. German director, photographer, cinematographer, and university lecturer Thomas Kutschker (1963) experiments with sound, mixing recordings from social networks from around the world with excerpts from old films to explore human fear and the yearning for knowledge. The Jihlava IDFF previously showed his films Shadow Worlds (2008), Me, Myself and I in the Age of Download (2010), and Financial Locations (Global Mash Up) (2015).“Words, sounds and pictures seem to be independent, disconnected as the appearance of light, shadow and reflexion themselves... But they are woven into each other and connected following their own logical construction.”

Strictly working with the film material inside the camera, Tuohy updates slowly forgotten approaches to create a collage of architectural geometries. The monolithic nature of the image blurs the outlines of the buildings as the film frame disintegrates into grids cutting through the layers of the image in multiple exposures. The buildings depicted represent the cultures of the three main ethnic groups of Malaysia. "This film is dedicated to Paul Clipson and Robert Todd, both of whose works were specifically on my mind while filming this film in Malaysia in 2016." R. Tuohy
