synopsis

The film assembles images from the daily work of livestock breeders in the unhospitable Hungarian steppe, where the universal laws of time have ceased to apply. The interplay between the panoramic shots of the landscape combined with details of daily farm life create a gloomy vision of a place that dooms all who live there, human and animal alike, to decay.

Beyond Marão
This surreal journey through a desolate mountain village, where an unknown danger hangs over the last surviving inhabitants, combines contemplative static shots of nature and animals taken from unusual angles, which are fascinating, yet, at the same time, raise uncertainty as to whether the mysterious landscape can be logically understood.DETAIL:We observe a silent mist-filled forest from whose depths an unrecognisable figure slowly emerges. As it comes nearer, we sense that it is not human, but rather an apparition embodying the incomprehensible magical nature of the location.

Benghazi Stories
Three micro-stories from contemporary Libya – specifically the town of Benghazi, stigmatised by the terrorist attack on the American consulate and the death of the American ambassador – present the city during a time of change and offer a look at the life of a used-car salesman, a fisherman on the sea, and a young doctor as she learns to drive a car. Seen from the air, the cars covered in a fine layer of dust and sand look like toy cars lined up on a shelf. In the words of the jovial salesman, "you can still smell the factory."

Cockpit
An observational documentary follows cockfighting on the Indonesian island of Bali. It creates a scathing denunciation of senseless violence against animals, fed by a betting frenzy. It does so not by depicting the fights themselves, but rather primarily through rapid cuts between gestures, movements, and facial expressions of the enthusiastic onlookers.DETAIL:It’s over, the cockfight is over. While punters in the audience exchange and count their money, the injured cock still lies in the ring, unable to fly.

The Red Carpet
In this uniquely positive film, young Rubina is a dealer of the happiness experienced within the conditions of the slum – a wonderful place to be born if you don't mind that malaria isn't always such a great thing. A probe into an anthill full of wide-eyed children, contented dirt, sewing machines and trash, from where one can make it all the way to the Oscar ceremony. Houses like scattered, torn, and rain-soaked cardboard boxes under the palm trees. Children in the streets and hidden alleyways, on the train tracks, in such numbers that nobody dares to purchase chocolate to hand out to the poor children; there would be too much.

Crisis Document. A Survival Guide

On the basis of ten selected myths, they create a film essay in which they take the dangers presented by the media through to their conclusions using audio-visual counterpoint, warning against the threat of fascism.DETAIL:„We are leaving Sweden to see what a crisis looks like. This is the first image we see. The public service has shut down and there’s only white noise.“

Amdo After Harvest
Footage of an ancient, often elemental ritual of the Tibetan community living on the far borders of China – a repeated encounter between people and the gods at harvest time. Into this tradition of sacred fire and ecstatic dancing seep modern signs and symbols such as iPods, fun fair balloons and children's t-shirt with pictures of Mickey Mouse. I pray as I walk when I spin the prayer wheel. Thick, grey smoke rises to the heavens and blood slowly drips down the forehead from the slit skin on the head. Even in traditional clothing, each generation unconsciously reveals its attributes.

Poem and stone
A film skirting the edge of performance, documentary, and poetry, explores the question of human memory through the combination of a variety of abstract and symbolic motifs. It refers to Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time and the principles of “involuntary memory” based on the unconscious storing of memories connected with concrete emotions.DETAIL:“I sit here, yearning for the smell of wet soil and gasoline, my fingers stained with the absent. I unself here. Distance and nearness are attributes of bodies. The journey of the soul involves not time and place.”
