New Life

director: Hans Richter
original title: Neues Leben
country: Germany, Switzerland
year: 1930
running time: 20 min.

synopsis

The film was commissioned by an exhibition of architecture and interior design in Basel to show modernity’s progressiveness in compartison to conservative architecture. Through editing that emphasizes geometry, form, and rhythm, the film also illustrates how many of the works of the interwar avant-garde were made on commission.

biography

Germany’s Hans Richter (1888–1976) believed that it was the artist’s duty to protest war and support revolution. Over time, he turned away from classic visual arts and used his abstract films to undermine the conventions of his era.
