WhereWhoYouMeAre

director: Jakub Krejčí
original title: WhereWhoYouMeAre
country: Czech Republic
year: 2016
running time: 4 min.

synopsis

The filmmaker explores the principles of movement while dreaming, and constructs them outside of the world of dreams by inserting graphic elements into images from the real world and simulating the space of a computer game in the virtual world. As she passes through these fictional worlds, the main character takes on a real as well as animated form.

Fever Dream
“Just look and see what’ve you’ve caused by stepping into a dream this way.” These are the first words of this film made using a combined technique. In the same way that we see images one on top of another in our sleep, here too, animated, static and live action film scenes about sickness, stagnation and freedom – as well as about animals and weeds (those that suffocate the spirit as well as the garden variety) – overlap and are knitted together with sound.

Delimitation
A young woman searches for a new apartment in a busy city. The film tests the possibilities of film language by placing more emphasis on the interplay of sound and movement than on classical character dialogue, and instead of traditional narration, it combines stylized movements with expressive dance that suddenly interrupts the flow of the story at certain moments.   “What fascinates me is the space itself and our ability to discover ourselves through it, in particular that exact place we can call our home. The space we are surrounded by creates a constant dialogue with our own identity.” T. Vejvodová

Tradition
The town of Kyjov has two traditions: folk culture and methamphetamine. Dressing up in folk costumes is one of the things that the region of Moravian Slovakia is known for, but it is a façade funded from the municipal budget. Then there is the less idyllic reality of daily life, the status of men and women, and drinking at the 24-hour bar or in one’s basement. An exacting rhythmic film poem, shot and edited like its subject – traditionally, i.e., using analogue film.

puddles, I don’t know
Dry ground, gravel, cracks in the asphalt, a look into a microscope, and a weather map as parts of an associative string based on the theme of waiting for the rain. The visual poem shows the soil in close-ups, adding new visual and semantic layers.

Life of Dreams
Lyricized images inspired by the world of dreams reflect the transition state between sleeping and waking. Ambiguous fragments of images, traces of experiences, and scenes from the unconscious together create a dream which slowly dissolves and all that remains are intangible clues and wakeful consciousness.

Moréna Rex
The video and rap clip confronts contemporary feminism and capitalism. The sober environment of economic forecasts and cash flows is transformed into a psychedelic 3D animation depicting a witch session. The film culminates with the author’s rap that hyperbolically criticizes the power and role of money in today’s society.

Buffer Zone Blues
The almost hallucinogenic whirlwind of virtual views of potential targets of a nuclear attack in a “buffer zone” shows the viewer an unpleasant proximity of total destruction, which threatened Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. The visuality of the film, reminiscent of direction finding, was created using the data from Google Maps.

How to Stop Watching a Video That Never Ends
A film essay based on the conflict between decorative shots from a bird’s eye perspective and three mechanical, linearly-connected monologues dissects the subconsciousness of an individual saturated with a multitude of differing choices, opinions, and possibilities in the numbers-driven age of digital media.

A state of mind: Free fall
Stairs leading from nowhere to nowhere, narrow shafts, bridges, ladders from which we fall in our dreams. A string of raster photographs depicting different places imitates a course of dreaming, making the subconscious look real. Frightfully unfamiliar images from the archives of collective memory sneak into the most inward corners of our existence.

Powerless Source of All Power
This journey in a static shot from Lubomír Lipský's Cirkus je cirkus (Circus Is Circus) explores the relationship between memory and visual history. A fragment from the visual database of the collective memory is accompanied by excerpts from an essay by Karel Kosík on the inability of Czechs to affect real politics through democratic elections.

This Kind of Spring Has Never Been Yet
This personal essay relates the perception of space to the mental universe of screenwriter and director Pavel Juráček who found his “truly ideal place” in the town of Příbram. The sensitive combination of journal entries, intimate notes, and film fragments tries to break down conventional storytelling techniques to build an original world of timeless thinking.

After the Magician
French-Mexican surrealist artist Alice Rahon made her only film - The Wizard - in 1947, which was lost before its first release. From this came a dream of a never-before-seen work, an encounter with a person who is unjustly forgotten, and an excursion to the landscapes of image, sound and imagination.
