Serbian film director Žilnik is a major figure of the Yugoslav Black Wave. He is noted for his socially engaged style and criticism of the censorship that was commonplace during the Yugoslav communist era. Following the abolition of communist one-party rule, he was an outspoken critic of Slobodan Milošević’s regime in Serbia. Recently he has directed several documentaries dealing with commonalities in Central and Eastern Europe and the question of immigration to and from Europe.
