Lea Ypi: What Is Europe For Today?
What does Europe still stand for - and for whom? Political philosopher and writer Lea Ypi, author of Free and Indignity, turns the question of Europe’s future inside out: the problem with the EU, in her view, is not that it is too transnational, but that it is transnational mainly for elites. The right then moves into the empty space left behind, with its division of the world into “us” and “the others.” In her keynote and conversation, Ypi will connect the promise of further enlargement, the relationship between Eastern and Western Europe, and the experience of post-communist societies long expected to catch up with the West. What if they can now offer Europe a different view of freedom, equality and political change? If Europe is to survive, it must reinvent whom it represents, whom it belongs to, and what future it can promise.
