Like a Fish out of Water – Panel discussion about the drought in the Czech Republic

This summer, 98% of the country was affected by drought –⁠ it’s clear that this is not a problem in only a few limited areas, but a serious issue with negative impacts on the whole society. The landscape is changing year by year, and drought is a phenomenon that not only farmers and hydrologists are painfully aware of, but one that we’re all observing. Yet we often seem to see it as a problem that’s separate from global climate change. As if empty wells and more expensive potatoes were one thing, burning fossil fuels another, and bark beetles yet another. What are the problems that drought causes in our country? Are politicians responding effectively to the challenge? To what extent can drought be tackled locally and what action is needed at a global level? And do we have hope for a wetter tomorrow?
