Anthony’s Broken Mirror

Dušan Makavejev / Yugoslavia / 1957 / 12 min.

synopsis

A lonely magician becomes the victim of his own illusions when he yearns for a mannequin in a shop window that is transformed into a young woman. The tragic ending shows the dangers arising from coveting an object of desire and the treacherous nature of the human psyche, which Makavejev had previously studied as an academic discipline. The soundtrack has been lost and in 2011 was replaced by a composition by Serbian composer Zoran Simjanović.

biography

Dušan Makavejev (1932) is a leading Serbian director and a representative of Yugoslavia’s so-called “Black Wave.” Because of their controversial political and erotic nature, his films – which often explored psychological subjects – were censored in both Yugoslavia and in Canada (where he lived in exile), and to this day he is known as someone who tears down social taboos.
