This original look at the plant kingdom made using a montage of Jan Calábek’s scientific film experiments combines a naïve style with expert terminology in a slightly surrealist homage to the work of this enthusiastic popularizer of science. Timelapse macro shots are accompanied by a description of the exact measurement of plant processes.

biography

Alice Růžičková is a film and television director. She studied at FAMU, where she now teaches. Her film [:rouge moulin:] (2012) was shown at the Jihlava IDFF. Professor of plant physiology Jan Calábek (1903–1992) was a pioneer in scientific filmmaking in Czechoslovakia and the founder of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences’ Scientific Film Laboratories.
