Prefabricated Houses

Jiří Menzel / Czechoslovakia / 1959 / 6 min.

synopsis

Jiří Menzel’s short student documentary celebrates modern panel construction as the housing of the future, and contrasts it with the dirty and outmoded buildings in the city center that are no longer suited to the needs of the young modern socialist family.

biography

Director Jiří Menzel shot mostly feature-length fiction films, and received an Oscar in 1967 for Closely Watched Trains. The documentary Prefabricated Houses was a student exercise during his second year at FAMU, and he returned to documentary work only rarely afterwards.
