Eva
Milan Mazúr / Czech Republic / 2026 / Czech Premiere / 49 min.
synopsis
In Milan Mazúr’s understated film, memories of escape and imprisonment intertwine with the present-day reality of undocumented seasonal workers. Eva once attempted to flee Czechoslovakia. Now, despite cultural and linguistic differences, she provides shelter and motherly care to young migrants in the Italian countryside. Yet a subtle tension permeates the contemplative images of manual labour and rest, stemming from the young men’s precarious status and the hostility of the local residents. This visually striking reflection on the various forms of migration shows that solidarity need not be contingent upon a shared language or culture.“There’s a lady here we call Mum.”
