synopsis
“A Poem about Brno and an Artist” is a poetic portrait of a member of Group 42, who often focused on abstract depictions of the city in his paintings from the 1960s. The camera shows him in his car, in his studio, and while painting and smoking his pipe. The film features poems by Matal’s friend Ivan Blatný and music by Jan Novák, a member of the Brno 57 group, which Matal founded. It is a graduation film.
biography
Eduard (Edvard) Hrubeš (1936–2021) graduated from the Department of Film and Television Journalism at FAMU in 1967. While at the school, he made the films
Fotografové (Photographers, 1964-65) and
Jeden + tři (
One + Three, 1964-66). He is best known as a television presenter and compère for music groups. He was gifted in both languages and music. He documented the situation shortly after the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia on film.
