synopsis

A sociologically focused documentary about life in the Na slatinách shantytown in Prague’s Ďáblice district, built during the First Republic on meadows and marshes, which still exists today without running water or sewerage and is largely ignored by the authorities. The narrative is based on the testimonies of long-time residents, some of whom would prefer to move to more civilised surroundings, while others are content with the rural character of this remote location. The film is a second-year documentary project.

biography

Ladislav Chocholoušek (1943–1995) studied documentary filmmaking (1962–1967, without graduation); he worked for Czechoslovak Television and, among other works, directed the propaganda film Atentát na kulturu (An Attack on Culture, 1977), which sought to discredit the musical underground and the band Plastic People of the Universe. Jiří Danda (1944) studied documentary filmmaking (1962–1967, graduated in 1969) and, while a student, made the memorable report Majáles 65 (May Day 65, 1966). He worked at Czechoslovak Television, directing pieces such as the feature-length documentary to mark the 15th anniversary of Czechoslovak Television, Odnes’ to všechno čas? (Has Time Taken It All Away?, 1968).
