synopsis
Joan, a Filipino transvestite, is a modern warrior. To support his 18-member family, he decides to head to Japan to earn money as a prostitute. Like other Filipino sex workers, he must undergo compulsory training, which includes a classical ballet examination. Only in this way will he be able to secure a work permit and reside in the country of the former occupying and contemporary economic power.
biography
Nick Deocampo (* 1959) is a filmmaker, historian, and educator. In the 1980s, he broached the taboo topic of homosexuality and thus became a pioneer of Philippine queer cinema. For over 30 years, he has made documentaries not only about sexual minorities, but also about military dictatorships, history, and the environment. He is currently a professor at the Film Department of the College of Mass Communication in the Philippines.
