synopsis

A documentary study of the lives of Tatra truck drivers during the construction of a dam. Through a mosaic of report-style sequences, it captures the world of hard, masculine labour combined with the dynamics of driving through dust, mud and potholes, alongside an adventurous, nomadic lifestyle and a sense of male camaraderie. The raw aesthetic draws on close-up and intimate shots from a handheld camera, making effective use of shots from the driver’s perspective, close-ups of the steering wheel, wheels, hands, faces, and racing sequences. The film was created as a second-year documentary project.

biography

Karel Zámečník (1942) studied film directing (1961–1966); during his studies, he left for France and did not complete his degree. In Paris, together with his classmate, cinematographer Antonín Lhotský, he shot a unique portrait of the painter Josef Šíma, Naissance d’un Vitrail / The Birth of a Stained-Glass Window (1966), for O.R.T.F., where he subsequently worked as a news director and documentary filmmaker, becoming renowned for his films about life beneath the ocean’s surface. After 1989, he turned his attention to Czechoslovak themes, such as Vzpomínky hraničářského psa (Memories of a Border Dog, 1998) on the history of the Iron Curtain.
