Výbuch na moři
Alexandre Promio / France / 1898 / 1 min.
synopsis
The calm surface of the sea is suddenly shattered by a powerful explosion and a towering column of water. The brief shot is structured around anticipation and a sudden transformation of the entire frame. Here, the camera captures not a continuous state but a singular, unrepeatable event, the force of which can be preserved and recreated by cinema.biography
Alexandre Promio (1868–1926) was one of the Lumière company’s foremost cinematographers. From 1896 onwards, he travelled with the Cinématographe across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. His films expanded early cinema’s horizons through travelogue perspectives, bustling urban scenes and a camera moving through space.film details
