synopsis
The amazement of people as recorded in early films is the central motif of the film appropriated from the Lumiere brothers’ collections which was shot around 1900 in London, restored, and coloured by artificial intelligence. It also offers a reflection on the regimes of power in which the filming apparatus seizes control over the observed reality. biography
Mike Hoolboom (1959) is a leading Canadian figure of experimental cinema not only thanks to his work, but also due to his curating activities at a distribution centre and as artistic director of the Images Festival. He has gained worldwide fame with his films and videos exploring issues of passion, identity and memory using various filming strategies, e.g. found footage, home video or voiceover.
