The Birth of a Flower
F. Percy Smith / United Kingdom / 1910 / 2 min.
synopsis
Time-lapse accelerates the growth and unfolding of plants, which is almost imperceptible in ordinary time. Flowers open before the camera like living beings, and seemingly motionless nature acquires gestures and rhythms of its own. The film reveals the hidden time of plants, transforming it into a spectacle.biography
F. Percy Smith (1880–1945) was a British pioneer of natural history filmmaking. Using macro photography, time-lapse, animation and studio equipment of his own design, he revealed processes hidden from the human eye. He turned plant growth and the behaviour of small creatures into both scientific observation and a source of wonder.film details
