Dialogue

director: Kryštof Strejc
original title: Dialog
country: Czech Republic
year: 2015
running time: 7 min.

synopsis

A dialogue between audio and video reinterprets a scene from the movie The Stranger (1967, dir. Luchino Visconti), in which the condemned debates with a priest about the absurdity of life, death, and the non-existence of God. The debate is abstracted by the skewed image as seen through cut glass and the meanings of their words take on a certain timelessness.

The Moor Demon
An engraving by Josef Váchal and a text by writer Karel Klostermann have inspired the author to lament the endangered integrity of the Bohemian Forest, suffering from civilization more than ever before. The visual evocation of an old film suggests the timeless nature of environmental problems that have plagued the wild and lovely Bohemian Forest for a long time.

Abstract Horror
The philosophical dystopia presents warning outlines of the near future where modern technology will not be a sign of progress, but rather decline. Behind the layer of film images, there is a monster created by computer animation, whose abstract virtual body represents the invisible ideological administration.

Moss Ball
In a world where wildlife loses its place, there is a need to replace it. The allusion to a trailer advertising the soft green moss ball breaks down the distance between the sterile human habitat and the sea plant popularized as an organic element of any home.

It's me
The film examines the current trend of capturing our own image using photography or video, in which the boundary between our real and image Selves disappears at the moment we turn the camera lens on ourselves. The photograph or video is thus no longer just a visual representation, but a depiction of our true Self.

Exhausted Sun
A mysterious cinematic poem about remembering a long-lost summer afternoon. Disturbing abstract details of natural elements permeate the metaphor of a children's game, passing in a contemplative vision of the spiritual essence of light and darkness, in which opposites eventually dissolve into units of primal matter.

Film as an Art Object. The Films of Stanislav Hora, 1980–2016
Fascinations: Exprmntl.cz - Out of competitionThe little-known Super 8mm films of Stanislav Hora (1959) from the 1980s are a little studied area of artistic film in our country. With his background in sculpture, Hora approaches film more as an artistic material – he uses it to animate the creation of sculptures, he draws on it, scratches and attacks its surface or uses it as a medium for art happenings. For Hora, film is a tool for expanding his artistic practice into other forms, a means for capturing visual processes or a kind of sculptural object. The Ji.hlava screenings are the premiere of newly digitized versions.Curator and author of the texts: Martin Blažíček (CAS FAMU)Digital reconstruction of the films: Lukáš Janičík, Emiliya VereshchaginaAudio mastering: Sara PinheiroThe films of Stanislav Hora were reconstructed at FAMU’s Centre for Audiovisual Studies thanks to the Academy of Performing Art’s institutional support for long-term conceptual development.Screening:BabraeCzechoslovakia, 1980, 6 min.Černý hadice / Black HoseCzechoslovakia, 1982, 3 min.Dobře posazená figura / Well-Positioned ModelCzechoslovakia, 1987, 3 min.Oko / EyeCzechoslovakia, 1987, 1 min.Pavouk / SpiderCzechoslovakia, 1987, 4 min.Kameny / StonesCzechoslovakia, 1987, 4 min.Fragment II – West BerlinCzechoslovakia, 1989, 6 min.FILCzech Republic, 2016, 5 min.

Droplets
The film takes a look at the lifelike behavior of inanimate matter in the form of droplets, allowing us to observe a change in shape or collective behavior. These droplets, like the robots in the famous work R.U.R., are made of chemically synthesized matter that resembles living matter, and the film thus allows the viewer to empathize with the feelings of the mad scientist Rossum from Čapek’s play. “Our film aims to pay tribute to pioneering ideas in the field of robotics and show new ways in which they can be used to create art.” J. Čejková
