Pastiche

director: Magdalena Kašparová
original title: Pastiš
country: Czech Republic
year: 2019
running time: 2 min.

synopsis

Inspired by the concept of retromania, the filmmaker calls attention to the current trend of recycling older visual styles and artifacts from the last decades of the 20th century. The numerous defects in image quality and the psychedelic soundtrack from homemade cassette recordings were created on purpose when digitalizing the original analogue material.

biography

Magdaléna Kašparová (1993) is currently studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where she is a student of the New Media I studio. She previously explored older format in The Moor Demon (2018), which was shown at last year’s festival.

Canis Lupus
Canis lupus, or the grey wolf, may be altered into the family dog by adding the attribute familiaris to its generic name. Horizontalis
The audiovisual essay explores the Danish part of Jutland from the view of both a living eye and an inanimate object. The horizontal line of the water surface represents a penetrable borderline between the world of people and the world of nature, bubbling with rippling reflections of the outer realities while accompanied with wind, voice and silence blasts.

The Moor Demon
An engraving by Josef Váchal and a text by writer Karel Klostermann have inspired the author to lament the endangered integrity of the Bohemian Forest, suffering from civilization more than ever before. The visual evocation of an old film suggests the timeless nature of environmental problems that have plagued the wild and lovely Bohemian Forest for a long time.

Dialogue
A dialogue between audio and video reinterprets a scene from the movie The Stranger (1967, dir. Luchino Visconti), in which the condemned debates with a priest about the absurdity of life, death, and the non-existence of God. The debate is abstracted by the skewed image as seen through cut glass and the meanings of their words take on a certain timelessness.

And Then He Just Stopped
The author uses film as an art-therapy tool to cope with traumatizing experience of her own. Told from a child’s point of view, the story builds on the symbolism of both common and uncommon objects, a clay body, a writhing snake or a metal means of payment, projected into the narrative structure of repeating motifs.

This Kind of Spring Has Never Been Yet
This personal essay relates the perception of space to the mental universe of screenwriter and director Pavel Juráček who found his “truly ideal place” in the town of Příbram. The sensitive combination of journal entries, intimate notes, and film fragments tries to break down conventional storytelling techniques to build an original world of timeless thinking.

Hoax
A flying saucer floats through the sky in black and white, creating the illusion of alien forces; upon taking a closer look, it’s obvious that it’s just a toy. The filmmaker examines the issue of videos spreading untruthful alarm messages using the same principles, highlighting the fine line between fact and fiction.

Sequence
A melancholic metaphor depicts transportation links and the logistical construction of a futuristic view of a dark, sterile environment. Fluorescent machines and vehicles that serve man live their own lives until their last moment, when they fall into pieces of the material from which they were constructed.

The Weather of Time
A metaphorical weather forecast portrays human emotions and sentiments in confrontation with contemporary social debates. The lightly satirical tone of the tv moderator’s presentation accompanies a video collage featuring a central motif of the Earth in which Africa is shrouded by clouds of existential questions and a spiritual crisis front threatens Europe.

Broken Windows
This audiovisual collage places shots from Hitchcock’s Rear Window into paper set decoration, expanding the original movie’s ideas in a playful and provocative mode. As viewers, we must get through to the characters within a maze of colourful layers and alien objects that visualize the process of medialization and point out the framework limiting our view.

Film as an Art Object. The Films of Stanislav Hora, 1980–2016
Fascinations: Exprmntl.cz - Out of competitionThe little-known Super 8mm films of Stanislav Hora (1959) from the 1980s are a little studied area of artistic film in our country. With his background in sculpture, Hora approaches film more as an artistic material – he uses it to animate the creation of sculptures, he draws on it, scratches and attacks its surface or uses it as a medium for art happenings. For Hora, film is a tool for expanding his artistic practice into other forms, a means for capturing visual processes or a kind of sculptural object. Can
This experimental film collage makes use of documentary, fiction and animated film techniques. The fading traces of childhood are mixed with the folk culture of the Haná region, all of it shot on 16mm film. The filmmaker thus preserves her chosen motifs, which are slowly but irrevocably disappearing from the present day.
