synopsis

This portrait of architect Carlo Mollino looks at the vision of organizing space, buildings or sculptures. Contours and surfaces, as well as the absence present in crossed-out notes, crumpled sketches and the shapes and textures of material and scratched patters of houses, construct a rhythmic collage of expressions to the landscape.

biography

Rhayne Vermette (1982) is a Canadian documentary filmmaker, programmer and animator. Her work often combines her two greatest interests: architecture and animation. Her 16mm films question the traditional view of the documentary form by inserting elements of Surrealism and decadence into seemingly ordinary scenes. In 2012, the Ji.hlava IDFF showed her fi lm Tudor Village: A One Shot Deal (2012).

Diary collages combine the emotions from important events such the interrogation of prisoners at Guantánamo, the Challenger disaster and the putsch in Chile with personal memories from the same points in time to create an interplay of large and small history. “I used footage of Chile’s Tancazo in my previous film. I later discovered the story behind that footage and was compelled to weave it into this film, originally intended to be a piece only about Omar Khadr.” C. Araneda

A portrait of New York’s Times Square shot on black-and-white film using a red, yellow and blue filter and subsequently copied onto colour stock. The simple destruction of the image is contrasted with the overabundance of digital advertising and billboards while at the same time emphasizing the silent rhythm of the everyday bustle on the street. Bicyclists and pedestrians seem to emerge from the image, to step out of the screen, followed by their spirits, visible trajectories of their deeds and decisions.

Inspired by the analysis of movement in the studies of Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey, the filmmakers depict the movement of a person going upstairs – except that they use a mirror effect to give the images a new sense of time existing outside of reality, and they replace an analysis of motion with a construction of infinite reproduction.The original chronophotography enabled the depiction of the individual stages of motion through a series of photographs. In the 1870s, such photographs were taken using a flash exposure of a thousandth of a second.

A tour of botanical gardens in Bilbao, Toronto and Quito, filmed on a haptic camera as part of a project for developing a camera that will record the things its owner touches. The filmmakers explore the diversity of visual identities at a time dominated by the combination of sight and sound. “The video is a part of the collaborative ‘Haptic/Visual Identities’ project investigating ‘haptic visuality’ through film via a digital DIY prototype. The work presents ‘macro images’ of a garden in a former colonial paradise.” A. Mergler

The Trembling Giant
A view of the landscape of the American Southwest, where the largest organism on Earth grows – a 60,000-year-old colony of quaking aspens – was filmed with a digital camera through the take-up reel of a 16mm projector in order to emphasize the characteristic effect of projected film material which rhythmically warps the space in front of the projector. Patrick Tarrant (1969) is originally from Melbourne, Australia and teaches at London South Bank University. He is the author of meditative films, that draw on the atmosphere of cities and urban peripheries.“My repurposing of a 16mm film projector warps space in three dimensions in order that we might reflect on our journey from a people who feared the natural world to people who must now fear for the natural world.”

Christiana Perschon shot her meeting with the artist Linda Christanell, a representative of Austria’s feminist avant-garde of the 1970s, on double 8mm fi lm without cutting. When shown, the fi lm’s split image shows footage of the two women fi lming one another to create a dialogue on seeing and being seen. “Every interaction with an image searches for its own form.  Approaching someone with my camera is not a one-way encounter but an act of getting to know each other: I see you seeing me instead of looking at you.” C.
