No Place Like Home
The fictional television quiz show “Weg van Nederland” presents five immigrants who, after having spent many years in Holland, must leave their friends, partners, studies, and employment because their asylum application has been denied. As children, they had fled from countries ruled by a lack of freedom; now they are going back and can win 4,000 euros or material prizes. The contest criticizes the prejudices and bureaucratic red tape that the Dutch system throws in the immigrants’ way.

Bomb Patrol Afghanistan
This three-part Discovery Channel miniseries looks at American units in Afghanistan who specialize in removing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The cameras used to film the show are part of the war technology that is the series’ main focus. From the animations that give viewers a vivid look at how IEDs work, and from the commentary comparing the military automobiles to those from the Mad Max movies, we see that the real heroes of this series are the war machines.

Don’t Try This at Home
Try to douse your clothing with gasoline and put it in the washing machine – explosion guaranteed! In the name of strictly scientific experiments, the hosts of this German version of the popular format originally from Norway sacrifice not only home appliances, but will even blow up an entire house. The heightening of the explosion’s dramatic effect through slow motion from three camera angles has an almost hypnotic effect on the viewer’s unconscious destructive cravings.
