What to Do While Trains Pass By

director: Karl Friis Forchhammer
original title: What to Do While Trains Pass By
country: Denmark
year: 2015
running time: 10 min.

synopsis

A group of five school-aged youths spend their free time in front of a graffiti-covered wall. In the rough area near the train tracks we observe the process of rap being created. The free way the youths speak and off-the-cuff texts accompanied by music emanating from their mobile phones say a great deal about way they perceive the world.

Optimism
Dawson City in Canada’s Yukon Territory abounds in goldmines and lack of sunshine. This portrait of the town is an audiovisual collage on the search for the sun and gold, history, and the everyday realities of its inhabitants. The atmosphere of cold, snowy Canada infuses the film with a dark mood reminiscent of Twin Peaks.

Taxi
Every corner of the world can have its taxi driver: A Chinese city, overgrown by a forest of skyscrapers, pulsating vibrantly and with unpredictable traffic – and a 100km-long beach in northern New Zealand where you’ll be hard-pressed to pass a car going in the other direction. Two different worlds brought together by a profession that can take on absurd forms. The sound of the ocean, whose high tide laps at tire tracks. This taxi driver doesn’t use the road. Cigar in hand, he hurtles towards the horizon, where the sky meets the land reflected in the wet sand.

On Guard
The film is a skit on the parallels between a caretaker and a security guard embodied by the character of a young man who keeps watching over everything all the time. Repetitive and automated everyday tasks are accentuated by monotonous aesthetics of the camera and a slow-moving pace, introducing the audience into the world of Korean pragmatic mentality and sense of responsibility.

time and love and I
They are happy together, but she gets a job offer in another country and he doesn’t want to go. I Wish
By tradition, the head of state addresses his citizens on state holidays. Over the many decades of his reign, the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, gave many such speeches. A political study in the form of a short archival film, Ojalá reveals a persistent consistency in the well-wishes and promises of a monarchy far removed from real life.

The Green Serpent – Of Vodka, Men and Distilled Dreams
Vodka as the source of the Russian nation’s transcendental inspiration. A green serpent whose bite pulls us into landscapes of dusk, introspectively told by a poet, actor, theatre director and scientist, against a backdrop of images from the Russian winter. The fifth element of the world reveals its potential in an ode to passion. Darkness. And in it, blossoming streetlights. Tire tracks in the snow in which shiver dried flowers. On the ground beneath them, the flashes of small stars. “Vodka is like sex. Like perfume. It depends on your mood.”

Cod Liver Oil and Cream Caramels
We enter a dilapidated boarding school through an open, broken window. Blotches on the pure snowy landscape. Visually refined footage of decay is accompanied by the reminiscences of the now-adult children who came here as seven-year-olds. Some of them would prefer to forget what others see as the best years of their lives. Children who cannot be seen. The giggling of children’s voices carries through the run-down rooms. A boy and a girl. They exchange new words. Someone is coming, but does not enter. The door opens on its own. Behind the building shimmer the Northern Lights.
