Passengers or crew members skip rope on the deck of the Tonkin. The simple game creates a regular rhythm of bodies, rope and the shipboard space. The shot captures a moment of leisure during the voyage, shifting attention away from the expedition’s destination to the time spent between places.

biography

Gabriel Veyre (1871–1936), a French pharmacist, photographer and cinematographer for the Lumière company, filmed in Mexico, the Caribbean, Japan, China and French Indochina. His films combine travelogue observation with staged scenes, while also revealing how early cinema shaped the European view of the world.
