Learned Spontaneous Movements

director: Dóra Maurer
original title: Megtanult önkéntelen mozgások
country: Hungary
year: 1973
running time: 9 min.

Four static shots of a girl reading a book accompanied by a voice reading a text in Hungarian are presented in four, increasingly complicated, auditory-image variations that encourage the viewer to learn new, spontaneous ways of watching the film.

Dóra Maurer (* 1937) is a prominent Hungarian artist, teacher, and curator. Her work, which was recently exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Tate Modern, includes sculptures, paintings, graphic designs, performances, photography, and films. In her films, she tends to focus on the ways of setting up, varying, and disrupting structures composed of diverse elements – from everyday gestures to abstract patterns.
