The Seal
synopsis
A man talks about life in a repressive society in this satirical critique of power and bureaucracy. The concept of a seal acts as a leitmotiv for the narrator’s milestones in life (birth, marriage, death). The film is one of Makavejev’s earlier works (it was made in 1955), but its story and message nevertheless remain timeless.biography
Dušan Makavejev (1932) is a leading Serbian director and a representative of Yugoslavia’s so-called “Black Wave.” Because of their controversial political and erotic nature, his films – which often explored psychological subjects – were censored in both Yugoslavia and in Canada (where he lived in exile), and to this day he is known as someone who tears down social taboos.more about film
