Red Saga

Red Saga

director: Kiri Dalena
original title: Red Saga
country: Philippines
year: 2004
running time: 16 min.

The sea of red and white flags that flood the rice paddies in the countryside and the streets of Manila symbolize resistance to the armed suppression of civil unrest. Engaged and poetic at the same time, the film is both a tribute to the victims of violence and a call to arms. In its emotional power and level of engagement, it is reminiscent of works of the Soviet montage school.

Kiri Dalena (* 1975) is a filmmaker, visual artist, and civil society activist. She deals with human rights issues, critically commenting on both Philippine history and the present. As part of the Erased Slogans project, she has been documenting demonstrations during the martial law period since 2008. Her film Requiem for M (2010) depicts the brutal massacre of thirty-four journalists in Maguindanao.
