synopsis

In this recording of a July concert by the Plastic People in the village of Skála near Humpolec, Ságl captures the almost apocalyptic dimension of the Plastics’ performances. He shoots expressive close-ups of the dancers using a hand-held spotlight, complemented by calmer footage of the musicians immersed in playing their instruments – all of it “edited” directly in the camera. The film includes all the chronologically shot footage, thus testifying to Ságl’s intuitive and concentrated work with the camera. The concert took place near the town of Humpolec, where the Plastic People worked as woodcutters in the early 1970s.

Jan Ságl (1942) je považován za dvorního fotografa undergroundu 60. a 70. let. Jeho práce s filmovou kamerou je ohraničena lety 1971–74, během nichž natočil celkem 12 krátkých filmů. Na počátku byla Super-8 kamera pořízená s přispěním Jiřího Koláře. Tu chápal jako extenzi své tehdejší fotografické praxe. Jistou dobu pak fotografoval a točil zároveň výjevy ze života undergroundu, koncerty, happeningy. Jeho dokumentaristický přístup nese silné stopy fotografické praxe, natáčí a komponuje s jistotou, téměř bez výjimky střihá přímo v kameře. Díky pohybu v uzavřené komunitě je jeho přístup důvěrný, často proniká objektivem a ručním reflektorem do bezprostřední blízkosti aktérů událostí a strhujícím způsobem tak zachycuje atmosféru podzemní kultury. Druhou polohou jsou jeho filmy autorské, v nichž volně navazuje na formy land artu a strukturální tendence amerického filmu.
