synopsisHeaven is an emerging feature-length documentary telling a story of 21st century China through an orphanage in a small village in northern China. The orphanage, which was founded and is run by Catholic nuns, formally illegal in China, accommodates over 100 children. All of them suff er from mental or physical disability. While the fi lm addresses, directly and indirectly, some of the biggest topics of modern China: one child policy, human rights, a lack freedom of religion, corruption or deterioration of human values in a communist regime, it is also a story about love

The “Dumpling Feast” was a private event held at the home of Dana and Jiří Němec on Prague’s Ječná Street. The idea for the event came from Ivan M. Jirous, who held the family’s dumpling recipe. Besides showing several people cooking and an improvised concert, the film’s main focus is on a “happening” by Jan Steklík and Karel Nepraš of the Crusader School of Pure Humor Without Jokes – the “measuring of the food.”

This documentary film points out new challenges in the inner workings of university education face to face with massification and commercialism influencing both practical and symbolic meanings of education and schooling as such. Talks on these issues are given by a score of personalities, e.g. by sociologist Frank Furedi or linguist Noam Chomsky. The film will be co-screened with Open Fortress. A Q&A session with guests is planned after the screening.

Dramaturge, screenwriter, and director Pavol Sýkora (1931–1970) was a central figure of Slovak documentary film in the 1960s. He worked as a dramaturge on documentary films at Koliba Studios. The selected films represent his most distinctive and original portraits. Besides an inclination for the reconstruction pioneered by Flaherty, Sýkora’s work is characterized by an attempt at achieving a maximum understanding of the subject free of embellishment, academism, and pathos, and without being didactic. A portrait of a boy sent to work in a farmer’s household, where he attends the local school. It captures not only the hard work he performs, but also those times when he plays with a dog and his frequent cigarette breaks. A record of one of Zorka Ságlová’s last land-art actions in October 1972. In the abandoned Vřísek Castle in the village of Zahrádky near Česká Lípa, a group of invited participants released hundreds of inflated condoms. The action was one of Ságlová’s many land-art interventions such as Laying Napkins near Sudoměř (1970) and Throwing Balls into Bořín Pond (1969). Participants included the members of the Plastic People and their friends. The film concludes with several spontaneous events such as the recreation of the Stalin monument and an improvised concert by Milan Hlavsa in a nearby cave.

Prerequisites and Emergence of FAMU’s Documentary Department in 1963-1970
A reading by Egon Bondy at the local pub in Klukovice in November 1974. Bondy reads Invalid Siblings as Ságl’s camera focuses primarily on the faces in the audience. About halfway through the film, there is an improvised acoustic concert by the members of the Plastic People, which transforms the event into a wild party, including Bondy’s own creative dancing.

Part three of this documentary series sees the birth of Jonáš, the first child of aid worker Petra and her Ethiopian partner Abel, during one stormy night. Lucie is left alone and without money during her postpartum period, but goes in search of her father and his new family in Tábor. Businesswoman Věra goes to visit her boyfriend’s family in Canada to tell them about her pregnancy, and along the way learns about the latest medical trends. Miky feels the effects of the hard work on her family farm, and her doctors urgently warn her to work less. At the end of the episode, she gives premature birth to a son, Josífek.

This workshop will focus on capturing human movement as a form of expression that is equal to spoken and written expression. We will be especially interested in both the spontaneous and the planned use of hands as language, including the unique characteristics of the cinematic recording of the hand’s rhythm and movement. Workshop participants will watch two documentaries: In the Land of the Deaf (dir. Nicolas Philibert, 1993) and Dancing Dreams (dir. Anne Linsel and Rainer Hoffmann, 2010). The first of these (by the director of To Be and to Have) enters the world of deaf-mutes; the second off ers a look at dance rehearsals at Pina Bausch’s Kontakthof with a group of young non-professional dancers.

We most commonly see Normalization era in Czechoslovakia – the time of social and political repression following the country’s invasion by Warsaw Pact troops in 1968 – through documentaries about dissidents or from old television series. But the dilemmas posed by the totalitarian regime affected everybody. The 16-part series Stories of the 20th Century explores various people’s (students, journalists, miners, secret police collaborators, soldiers, rank-and-file Party members, homosexuals, and many others) responses to the pressure they received not only from the government apparatus but also from those around them. ---Three films from the series will be presented by their writers and directors.
