26th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival
director: Steina Vasulka
original title: Selected Treecuts
country: United States
running time: 9 min.
A formal experiment sees trees as objects free from their semiotic meaning. The treetops become only a cluster of shapes, colours, and structures intended for digital editing. Instead of a romantic contemplation of nature, the film explores the possibilities of video as a tool for the aesthetic manipulation of reality.
„We actually fell in love, I think: Not with each other but with the video.“ S. Vašulka
Steina Vašulka (1940, Iceland) is regarded as a pioneer of video art. Among the work that she shares with her husband, Woody (Bohuslav Vašulka, a Czech native), includes experimental and documentary films, video and audio installations, and multimedia works. In 1971, together with Andreas Mannik, they founded the alternative video centre The Kitchen (in Greenwich Village, USA).
