Richard Hronský & Medard Zeman

Ambient, experiment, fujara: for the next concert in the Midnight Ritual series, the guests are Richard Hronský and Medard Zeman.

Richard Hronský is one of the key emerging figures on both the Slovak and Czech independent scenes. He is the author of the remarkable electroacoustic meditation Pohreb (Funeral, LP released by mappa, 2025), while his fujaraperformances create a unique sense of connection with the spirit of place and the local community. His music reflects on the passage of time, memory, identity rooted in remembrance yet open to innovation; at the same time, it offers a deep chill—a space for emotion, recollection, and openness to the unexpected.

Medard Zeman is a conceptual artist working across several levels: musical, visual, and performative production. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and is currently a doctoral student at FAVU in Brno.
His latest solo work, the opera Lighthouse of Everything, comments on the meaning of art in today’s grotesque world. He is now developing a new ambient recording that seeks peace amid the turbulent waters of 2025. The musical part of this new piece premiered officially at the Czech Center in New York, while the visual component of the project is still in search of itself.

According to a popular myth, when Czechoslovakia split, one person duplicated, giving rise to Richard Hronský and Medard Zeman. Both are red-haired, play the fujara, share the same circle of friends, and do almost the same things—except one lives in the Czech Republic and the other in Slovakia. Hronský and Zeman mirror each other in sonic taste, pan-disciplinary artistic and cultural practice, and self-reflection. Since they met, their dialogue has lasted longer through shared fujara playing than through spoken words.
