Freedom’s Blind Spot: Democracy or the Dictate of the Super-Rich?

When oligarchy coexists with democracy, democracy is in trouble. We’re seeing this now in the US and also in the wake of the Czech elections, but the problem itself has always been with us. We don't really notice it, and so we vote according to the oligarchs’ interests in democracy. The powerful and wealthy no longer hide their power as they once did. We are entering an era of “unabashed oligarchy.” It no longer needs democracy, but it needs us to continue to believe in it. If we care about democracy, how should we deal with this contradiction? Is it still possible for citizens to regain real influence in the world they live in? Or are the decisions being made elsewhere?
