biography

Kelly is a young idealist who teaches at a public secondary school on the urban outskirts and wants to change the world – until she clashes with a student and discovers that in Brazil there are no rules, only exceptions. As with his previous films, director Affonso Uchôa sets this hybrid drama, poised between documentary and fiction, in his hometown, the industrial city of Contagem. His social critique draws on non-professional actors and a precise formal approach that lends greater authenticity to this account of education, social class and a repressive state apparatus that disciplines and punishes. Confrontation can open our eyes, and if we detach ourselves from the present, we may glimpse the future through its cracks.
