director: Yann Beauvais
original title: Derrubada não!
country: Brazil
year: 2019
running time: 23 min.

synopsis

Out of the forests of north-eastern Brazil, an essay on the relationships with nature, location and soil grows out, developing into musings on the configuration of space, proprietary demands and care about landscape. Against the background of biological diversity, which stands for a commentary from the perspective of history and culture, it introduces the issue of ownership of forests, conceivably by those who inhabit them.

"Kaleidoscopic and impressionistic views from a site in the in Brasilian 's sertão in which anthe Atikum artist Edson Barrus has preserved a tree: the Imburana which is a specy in danger. " Y. Beauvais

biography

French experimental filmmaker, critic and essayist Yann Beauvais (1953) has been making short films since 1976. Influenced by Russian formalism and structuralism, but also by music, he creates mainly compilation movies in which he often composes seemingly unconnected photos while using the method fast cutting. A cofounder of the Light Cone distribution company.

Displacement
The image’s fragile cohesiveness, disturbed by digital disintegration and overlays to create a visually impressive composition, emphasizes the need to think about remediated messages on the subject of nationalism and militarism, for the filmmaker works with images of Palestinian fields being burnt by Jewish settlers and vows taken by Israeli soldiers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. “My work tracks patterns in nature, landscape and human form, perceived by camera and mind, struggling to comprehend the vast intensity of the living experience of the world through electronic media.“ G. The Space Shuttle Challenger
Diary collages combine the emotions from important events such the interrogation of prisoners at Guantánamo, the Challenger disaster and the putsch in Chile with personal memories from the same points in time to create an interplay of large and small history. “I used footage of Chile’s Tancazo in my previous film. I later discovered the story behind that footage and was compelled to weave it into this film, originally intended to be a piece only about Omar Khadr.” C. Araneda

Dead End, rewind reversal
This inventive experiment with a stereo 3D image follows a train track ending at a ruined bridge and then back again through the forest. The focus is on the spatial perception of diverse depictions of the journey laid side by side, captured with a film camera and confusing the eye of the viewer with various overlays and inversions of time levels. “Stereo3D films shall be done such a kind that they make no – or another – sense if they where only in mono2D. What we know from flat filmmaking is no help. So filmmakers have to start from scratch again and spectators too.”

more than everything
A pensive analysis of the vision and perception apparatus shared by all two-eyed beings gazes far ahead and in an intriguing perception experiment, explores the imagination of the depth of field and the illusory consistency of the image while dissecting the routine perspective on objects, shapes, motion and the phenomena around us."This is a dance between your brain and the world. We are bathed in interferences from sensual data to what might be out there. We will go to another land, we will try another sea. One plus one equals three." R. Kohlberger

Impact-9.2
The filmmaker arranges 59,049 personal photographs (out of the long-term project) from 2002 and 2003, all of them created in the post-9/11 atmosphere, into repetitive geometric compositions to form a changeable structure of infinite possibilities for interpreting memories. Set to a musical composition inspired by Thomas Hardy’s poem “The Comet at Yalbury”. German-born filmmaker Thomas Mohr (1954) lives in the Netherlands. In his work, he seeks out new ways of generating images. Originally, he was drawn to abstraction; today it is digital photography. The Jihlava IDFF previously showed his film Gedankenstrich(e) (2014), in which he arranged images into regular grids to evoke a journey and pilgrimage across a landscape of text.“What d o we remember, what d o we forget and what d o we really learn? Based on 531,441 pictures taken in 30 years I’m exploring how our memories transform into experience.”

The Sun Quartet, part 1: Sun Stone
The use traditional multiple exposure techniques combine with the search for formal similarities to create a lyrical work in which the outlines of rivers and plants merge together and vibrant colors alternate in a constant rhythm of overlapping and multiplication. "Colectivo Los Ingrávidos arises from the need to dismantle the audiovisual grammar that the aesthetic-television-cinematic corporativism has used to guarantee the diffusion of one audiovisual ideology." Domus
This portrait of architect Carlo Mollino looks at the vision of organizing space, buildings or sculptures. Contours and surfaces, as well as the absence present in crossed-out notes, crumpled sketches and the shapes and textures of material and scratched patters of houses, construct a rhythmic collage of expressions to the landscape. “By way of story, C. Mollino pledged himself to his craft and foreshadowed a brilliant lifetime of architecture. In telling this story, Domus configures its author’s own intentions, transposed from architecture and housed within cinema.” R. Vermette

Latency, Contemplation 1
A digitally distorted seascape brings out the horizon, which together with the rolling waves creates a visually hypnotic abstract composition of horizontal surfaces, moving in time to minimalist piano music and electronically manipulated ocean sounds, in a seemingly continuous observation of the shore. “Each line with its own intrinsic ‘intuition’ metamorphoses my perception, exploring how all these personal, inner experiences, both illusionary and tactile, shift and transform into a visual poem.”

Or / Or, Hawick, may 18
In the middle of the Teviot River in Scotland, the filmmaker saw a color in the sky like in the paintings of Gustav Klimt. He translates his amazement at this moment into fluid patterns of a digitally decomposed scene, all the way to its radical ending when the variously colored grids flowing on the screen like a calm horizon again dissolve into Klimt’s golden color. "Making films is opening my heart and letting the magical powers of life shine in my imagination to merge them in images. I try to thrill those who watch colour and time flow in my films." J. La Notte Salva
Tiny animals of different kinds were filmed by night and then magnified under semi-transparent spherical glasses. The activity of constantly moving organisms subjected to magnification results in unexpected images of unrest, changeability, migration and creativity in altering shapes. „La notte salva is a path of sensations that attempts to gather around its nature without revealing it, without opening itself to any human language.“ G. I Would Leave Everything Here
The patient observation of the four seasons – daytime and nighttime events, manifestations of the natural elements, and the peacefulness of minimalist images – as seen through the window. A dramatic compilation of images into an extraordinary record of the ordinary flow of time. Croatian filmmaker, photographer, and audiovisual artist Ivan Faktor (1953) has been making art since 1975. In 1995, his film At Home was shown at the Venice Biennale, and he also represented his home country at the São Paulo Art Biennial. The Jihlava IDFF previously showed his film Self-Portrait (2006), in which a camera inside the filmmaker’s body records a journey through the human body in the form of abstract images, shadows, and rhythms.“... for here I would leave this earth and these stars, because I would take nothing with me from here, because I’ve lo oked into what‘s coming, and I d on‘t need anything from here.” (László Krasznahorkai)

Disintegration 93-96
The personal insecurities and pent-up emotions of a Filipino immigrant to the USA give way to political ruminations and critical commentaries on the colonization of the mind by the American Dream. A montage of family movies from the title’s years presents an anatomy of family ties and a reliving of one’s own identity. “With every project I think I learn filmmaking from scratch, all over again in a new way, and I say ‘fuck that’ to whatever process I did before.” M. Reverza
