Revolutions Happen Like Refrains in a Song

director: Nick Deocampo
original title: Revolutions Happen Like Refrains in a Song
country: Philippines
year: 1987
running time: 49 min.

The combination of queer cinema and engaged documentary delivers an urgent message about the need for social transformation. It works with the juxtaposition of the sexual minority and the 1986 revolution in which the regime of dictator Ferdinand Marcos fell. Freedom can only be achieved by transforming socio-economic and political structures.

Nick Deocampo (* 1959) is a filmmaker, historian, and educator. In the 1980s, he opened the taboo subject of homosexuality and became a pioneer of Filipino queer cinema. For over 30 years, he has been making documentaries not only about sexual minorities, but also about military dictatorships, history, and the environment. He is currently a professor at the Film Institute of Mass Communication in the Philippines.
