27th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival
director: Štěpán Uždil
original title: Rozpitej
country: Czech Republic
running time: 29 min.
synopsisThe unceasing monologue of the distinctive regional painter Jiří Bakala ranges thematically from blunt denunciations of political conditions, through subtle recollections of moments of personal happiness, to existential reflections on the meaning of existence. He does all this with a paintbrush in one hand and a bottle of vodka in the other.
“But I know you shouldn't do that. But I like the way it burns. I want to maintain some kind of freedom.”
Štěpán Uždil graduated from the Panská Secondary School of Communication Technology in Prague and studied at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín, majoring in Directing and Screenwriting. His film Rozpitej (2019) was one of the finalists in the Young Vision section at the Czech Vision national film festival.
