The Thin Blue Line

The Thin Blue Line

Errol Morris / United States / 1988 / 103 min.

synopsis

This aesthetically compelling film examines the 1976 murder of a Dallas police officer and exposes the mechanisms of judicial error. Through meticulously structured interviews, a detailed analysis of police and court records, and accompanied by Philip Glass’s minimalist music, it constructs conflicting versions of a single night, using reconstruction not as illustration but as an analytical tool: the same moments recur in different variations, thereby revealing the instability of memory and testimony. It employs noir stylization, slow close-ups, flashes, and empty spaces with editing that does not assemble a linear crime story but rather a web of contradictions. In doing so, it demonstrates that the conviction was based on manipulation, unreliable testimony, and institutional pressure to close the case quickly. The film redefined the possibilities of an investigative documentary and became a landmark work in debates about miscarriages of justice, the credibility of visual imagery, and the power of audiovisual evidence.

The nearly forgotten case of Randall Dale Adams was transformed into a national sensation thanks to the film and had a profound impact on legal developments. Findings uncovered during filming cast doubt on witness testimony and the prosecution’s case, contributed to a retrial, and increased public pressure to review the verdict. In March 1989, the Texas Court of Appeals overturned Adams’s conviction, and after twelve years in prison, he was released.

biography

Errol Morris (1948) is a legend of American socially engaged documentary filmmaking. His films are characterized by meticulous investigations, stylized reenactments, and analytical work with testimonies. He became famous for his films on U.S. war strategy, The Fog of War (2003) – which won him an Oscar – on the Abu Ghraib prison, Standard Operating Procedure (2008), and on the obsession with death, Tabloid (2010). He developed the “Interrotron” method, which allows interviewees to look directly into the camera during an interview while maintaining eye contact with the director.
