In Manila

director: Ricky Orellana, Josephine Atienza, Mike Alcazaren
original title: Sa Maynila
country: Philippines
year: 1989
running time: 7 min.

This impressionistic urban symphony captures Manila as a place of fascinating contrasts. Poverty clashes with the construction boom, the lingering beggars with rushing cars and pedestrians. Counterpoints are both a meaning-making and stylistic element. One poetically mirrors the other.

Mike Alcazaren has been the director of Alcazaren Bros, a company specializing in animation and commercial production, since 1989. In 2013 he directed his feature debut Puti. He is currently working on visual installations and contributing to a comic book about zombies.

Josephine Atienza is a pioneer of film archiving in the Philippines. In 1993, she co-founded SOPHIA, the Society for the Archiving of Philippine Films. A year later, she co-founded the ABS-CBN Philippine Film Archive. She is also involved in film production and directing.

Ricky Orellana has been involved in film since his architectural studies. He is interested in animation, feature films, and documentaries. He teaches experimental animation and screenwriting. He sits on the ACPI Animation Committee and heads the audiovisual archive at the Mowelfund Film Institute.
