Stefan Themerson, Franciszka Themerson / Poland / 1931 / Czech Premiere / 11 min.

synopsis

Inspired by a poem of the same name, written by Anatol Stern (1929), where the famished proletariat yells: “They stuck our throats with the food for soul!”, this experimental film is a homage to committed poetry. The film was thought to have been destroyed by the Nazis, but in 2019 it was discovered in the Bundesarchiv.

biography

In the 1930s, a painter and illustrator Franciszka Themerson (1907–1988) and a poet and philosopher Stefan Themerson (1910–1988) created 5 experimental films and founded a revue F(ilm) A(rtistique). There, in 1937, Stefan published his essay “The Urge to Create Visions”. After the war, they stayed in London. In 2019 Tate Modern displayed the works they created together.
