biography

Jan Martinec (1984) is a graduate of the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design. An examination of his career reveals an interest in the relationship between the mechanical present-day and meager history, as well as the desire to explore the fragile spaces between documentary, experimental film, and narrative.

other films in the section

The Colonel’s Photograph
Excerpts from a television interview with Eugène Ionesco in an adaptation of his absurd story The Colonel’s Photograph, which is dominated by the motif of a swimming pool that conceals drowned bodies. The visual pun is a compilation of techniques: animation, video, 3D graphics, and text, which give the seemingly random scenes a sort of structure.

Self-portrait as Doubt
Self-portrait as Doubt is a video collage-essay on the topic of a doubt and an uncertainty. In the film the author through an image and sound develops a contemplation about his own art praxis. puddles, I don’t know
Dry ground, gravel, cracks in the asphalt, a look into a microscope, and a weather map as parts of an associative string based on the theme of waiting for the rain. The visual poem shows the soil in close-ups, adding new visual and semantic layers.

Like the director's other films, this one was also created during the filming of an event in public space, specifically capturing fragments of the celebrations of the anniversary of the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution. The film, ostensibly a reportage, transforms the event into a vortex that pays homage to avant-garde films from the first half of the 1920s.

Horizontalis
The audiovisual essay explores the Danish part of Jutland from the view of both a living eye and an inanimate object. The horizontal line of the water surface represents a penetrable borderline between the world of people and the world of nature, bubbling with rippling reflections of the outer realities while accompanied with wind, voice and silence blasts.

Exhausted Sun
A mysterious cinematic poem about remembering a long-lost summer afternoon. Disturbing abstract details of natural elements permeate the metaphor of a children's game, passing in a contemplative vision of the spiritual essence of light and darkness, in which opposites eventually dissolve into units of primal matter.

Moréna Rex
The video and rap clip confronts contemporary feminism and capitalism. The sober environment of economic forecasts and cash flows is transformed into a psychedelic 3D animation depicting a witch session. The film culminates with the author’s rap that hyperbolically criticizes the power and role of money in today’s society.

Prologue Of Signum Supra
Signum Supra presents art as a shamanic ritual, as an aestheticized tool materializing principles that cannot be grasped by consciousness. Gripping structures that resemble rocks and landscape contours float in indeterminate space, serving as a springboard for contemplating the patterns of perception beyond the visible and the tangible.

Canis Lupus
Canis lupus, or the grey wolf, may be altered into the family dog by adding the attribute familiaris to its generic name. This experimental film brings out parallels between the aggressive nature of the wild beast and humans with the author eliminating soundtrack, building up his reflections using 3D animations combined with a written monologue told by invisible narrator.

The slow movement of various species of insect in an abstract, brightly lit setting creates suggestive allusions to incontrollable chaos, apathy, and the decay of social structures. The minimalist visual imagery is accompanied by ambient music that works with realistic sound and static.

And Then He Just Stopped
The author uses film as an art-therapy tool to cope with traumatizing experience of her own. Told from a child’s point of view, the story builds on the symbolism of both common and uncommon objects, a clay body, a writhing snake or a metal means of payment, projected into the narrative structure of repeating motifs.
