synopsis

The director's candid confession offers an unusually honest look at foster parenting. It reveals the difficult journey she and her adopted daughter have been through, and together with other foster parents, she searches for answers that would help her understand the sudden separation on the threshold of her daughter's adulthood. She tries to cope with feelings of helplessness, personal failure, and endless love. But above all, the film is a story of all children who struggle with the consequences of abandonment and the upheaval of their basic certainties at the very beginning of their lives. They carry a burden they did not choose and which exceeds all their childish strength. It is their foster parents who can help them bear it. This candid exploration of foster parenting hides nothing and gets to the heart of the matter, yet above all it shows the power of the bond of unconditional parental love, regardless of whether we call it foster or biological.

biography

She was born on August 9, 1969, in Prague. She graduated with a master's degree in journalism from Charles University's Faculty of Social Sciences. She started out as a journalist (working for Týden, Lidové noviny, MF Dnes, among others) and later began to focus on directing, dramaturgy, and screenwriting, fields in which she is still actively involved today.

She is known as a director of live television broadcasts of music programs, but she also shoots documentary compilations and television programs. Until 2009, she was the regular director of the Czech Television program Noci s andělem (Nights with an Angel). In 2004 and 2005, she directed two Czech Television New Year's Eve programs, and she also directed several episodes of the programs Bydlení je hra (Living is a Game), Zkus mít vkus (Try to Have Taste), and Hodinový manžel (Hourly Husband). Markéta Nešlehová shot two documentaries in co-production with Bedna Films and Slovo 21. ROM-ID is a compilation documentary about the stories of young Roma scattered across Europe, which premiered at the World Roma Festival - Khamoro 2010. The second documentary, Ženy v poli (Women in the Field), shows three protagonists, Denisa, Lucie, and Aurélia, as Roma women who refute the stereotypical view that Roma are not interested in education, personal development, and social participation.
