synopsis

This footage of fog rolling through Australian forests was filmed in New South Wales in 1997. In late 2019 and early 2020, the region will be hit by unprecedented wildfires that experts have linked to global warming. yann beauvais allowed the original material to be exposed to tropical climatic conditions for several years and supplemented it with found footage of the fires in 2023. The distinctly tinted images of ferns, trees and vapours, overlaid with scars and other signs of decay, are accompanied by an intense soundtrack.

“Driving from Brisbane to Sydney, a winter day in August 97, I stop in a forest to record the fog within the forest. Made a tinted print of this footage and let rot few years in another tropical region. In 2023 I decide to work with that fooatges and its mutation, add sound and found footages of burning forests.”

biography

yann beauvais (1953) is a French experimental filmmaker. As a critic, programmer and curator, he was one of the founders of the distribution company Light Cone in 1982. His texts have contributed significantly to the formulation of the history of experimental cinema and to reflections on the political and aesthetic viability of “smaller” cinemas. A collection of his texts, Agir le cinéma – Écrits sur le cinéma expérimental (1979–2020), was published in 2022. IDFF Ji.hlava has screened several of his films, most recently Derrubada não! (2019).
