The Space Shuttle Challenger

director: Cecilia Araneda
original title: The Space Shuttle Challenger
country: Canada
year: 2017
running time: 9 min.

synopsis

Diary collages combine the emotions from important events such the interrogation of prisoners at Guantánamo, the Challenger disaster and the putsch in Chile with personal memories from the same points in time to create an interplay of large and small history.

“I used footage of Chile’s Tancazo in my previous film. I later discovered the story behind that footage and was compelled to weave it into this film, originally intended to be a piece only about Omar Khadr.” C. Araneda

biography

Cecilia Araneda (1970) was born in Chile, from which her family fled to Canada after the military coup. She studied screenwriting in Canada, where she continues to live and work today. In her deeply personal short films, which she accompanies with her own commentary, she often expresses her childhood memories. The Ji.hlava IDFF previously showed her film What Comes Between (2009), in which she returned to Pinochet’s coup d’état.
