original title: Unknown
country: Czech Republic
year: 2017
running time: 2 min.

synopsis

The experimental film Unknown presents prototypical urban motifs, such as public transport and escalators, transforming them into abstract black and grey fragments using rotoscope animation to the accompaniment of authentic sounds. Using these scenes, the filmmaker is trying to evoke in the viewer the subjective feeling of alienation in the anonymous environment of a city.

other films in the section

Wild Eye - Annihilation of Space - Despite of Limitations
Transforming the author’s film from the 1970s, the film trilogy captures a naked woman’s body in gentle motion iterations.  The combination of abstract expressionism and the figural motif uses distinctive colours, rapid shape-shifting and the dynamics of the human silhouette.

And Then He Just Stopped
The author uses film as an art-therapy tool to cope with traumatizing experience of her own. Told from a child’s point of view, the story builds on the symbolism of both common and uncommon objects, a clay body, a writhing snake or a metal means of payment, projected into the narrative structure of repeating motifs.

Operation Urban Warrior
Anthony Bird is a war veteran who was the sole survivor of a military operation in his unit. His memories are as surreal as the animation which simulates the course of the incident in the form of a computer game. Everything looks flat but we must trust our own sensees which tell us that in reality, the world isn't flat.

De Potentia Dei
Potentia dei is a notion difficult to translate, but possible to explain. The same goes for a film essay by Ondřej Vavrečka, with signs and information, their interpretation and secrets as its main theme. The collage-like film uses sharp audiovisual contrasts to make people think.

A state of mind: Free fall
Stairs leading from nowhere to nowhere, narrow shafts, bridges, ladders from which we fall in our dreams. A string of raster photographs depicting different places imitates a course of dreaming, making the subconscious look real. Frightfully unfamiliar images from the archives of collective memory sneak into the most inward corners of our existence.

Dare Nativitatis
This intimate essay presents the inner experiences of pregnant woman before and during childbirth. As she tries to come to terms with physical pain and as she mentally processes the situation, more complex questions arise as well. A documentary record mixed with questions and visions that reflect the mind and brain of a birthing woman.

Moss Ball
In a world where wildlife loses its place, there is a need to replace it. The allusion to a trailer advertising the soft green moss ball breaks down the distance between the sterile human habitat and the sea plant popularized as an organic element of any home.

Tradition
The town of Kyjov has two traditions: folk culture and methamphetamine. Dressing up in folk costumes is one of the things that the region of Moravian Slovakia is known for, but it is a façade funded from the municipal budget. Then there is the less idyllic reality of daily life, the status of men and women, and drinking at the 24-hour bar or in one’s basement. An exacting rhythmic film poem, shot and edited like its subject – traditionally, i.e., using analogue film.

Anomaly
A metacommentary movie about a movie, in which the director and the cameraman are filming a report about the extinction of butterflies and ecosystem collapse, while in the editing room they polemise about ways to communicate clearly and comment on their dramaturgical decisions, as well as express frustration with the difficulty of reaching a modern audience with more complex communication.

Wet Wedding
Behind the curtain of the film strip the concreteness of images appears and disappears again with varying levels of visuals shifts and deformations. The sounds of the film’s movement mix with voices that give the scenes context but nevertheless prevent a reconstruction of the fable. – The story dissolves, and during this layering we move further away from it ever being one.

Loathing...
A personal essay inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s Player Piano (1952). Using machins learning on the level of deep reading, the film processes visual and audio records, distorting them, rearranging them, and subsequently submitting them to an algorithm created in part by artificial intelligence that reconstructs the sequences and arranges them in chronological order.
