synopsis

Wenceslas Square is the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in a nutshell, explains Karel Höger in his annotated mosaic of local phenomena, which includes “meetings by the horse”, teeming crowds of tourists from Czechoslovakia and abroad, shopping frenzy, and patriotic affection for Czech beer and glass.

biography

Václav Táborský (born 1928), a Czech pioneer of cinéma vérité, made over eighty short films and almost fifty educational programmes. After August 1968, he emigrated to Canada, where he worked as an educator. His work is divided into satirical documentary features and feature films for children, including Escape in the Wind and Miraculous Puzzle.
