Old Shatterhand Came To See Us

director: Dušan Hanák
original title: Prišiel k nám Old Shatterhand
country: Czechoslovakia
year: 1966
running time: 12 min.

A sarcastic report on living in an enclosed reservation behind the iron curtain. Against the backdrop of a first-plan confrontation between natives and inquisitive strangers, Hanák, in a sequence of amusing visual and audio situations, uncovers the weariness of a socialist society tired of building “brighter tomorrows”.

Dušan Hanák (1938) is the creator of award-winning short films such as Learning (1965) and Day of Joy (1972). He made one of the most influential Slovak films of all time, the feature-length documentary Pictures of the Old World (1972). For the film I Love, You Love (1980), Hanák won the Berlinale 1989 Silver Bear for Best Director.
