synopsis
Set in Czechoslovakia during the totalitarian era, this documentary collage uses film metaphors and associational editing to reflect on freedom and the lack of it, on the relationship between citizens and totalitarian power. Shots of promoted reality are set against the personal perceptions of individuals. The film has received a number of awards, including the Golden Spire at the 40th San Francisco IFF.
The film is being screened in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic.

biography
Slovak director Dušan Hanák (1938) combines probes into society with poetic visions. His Pictures of the Old World (1972) is a documentary about the life of old mountain dwellers in Slovakia. He uses documentary processes even in his fictional works.more about film
